A question we often ask ourselves when browsing for some good content is ‘why did they have to restrict this site?’. The reason why most of the time, we feel that the really good websites are all getting restricted is that they actually are being banned. Take India for example, the IT Act, 2000, has set numerous regulations around the web content around Indian servers.
This is legit because websites are being blocked because of censorship or trademark infringement issues. So, there is no point blaming the government here, however, there are ways you can get around these websites, thanks to proxies.
What is a Proxy?
Proxy or proxy server is a server that helps you become anonymous on the web. To understand it better, think of it as a third party that acts as a medium to connect you to a website. Whatever input you give will be received by the proxy server and all data your computer downloads will be through the proxy. Your own IP address won’t be sent to the server, rather the proxy’s IP address will be sent.
By doing this, it is able to partially or completely hide you and give you greater privacy. To connect to a proxy server for a website, simply search ‘proxy list’ on the search engine. This will display all available proxies. Some very popular proxy servers are Free-proxy, Squid, Wingate etc. There are some free and some paid proxies available on the internet. Paid proxies are usually more reliable and faster, but you can use what suits you.
How to set up a Proxy?
To get started, the first thing you must know is how to enable and disable proxy in the browser you are using.
For Google Chrome,
- Click the Customize and Control Button and click Under the Hood.
- Click Change proxy settings.
- Click LAN Settings and check the “Use a proxy server for your LAN” box.
- Enter the IP Address of the Proxy Server and the Port Number
- Click OK
If you are using any other browser such as Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari, search online on where to find proxy settings and then enter the IP address of the proxy server.
This method also applies to websites restricted by an institution. You could also try completely disabling proxy. Changing proxy settings doesn’t make you completely anonymous, but if done right, it should be able to bypass you through restricted websites.
In most cases, using a proxy website is the best and most secure option. You may end up paying for it, but that would be an investment worth every buck. There are hundreds of proxy websites you can find on the internet. In order to find the proxy server for a particular website, say for example Kickass, simply search “Kickass proxy servers” and choose a website to use it as a proxy server.
If you are looking for a way to bypass websites restricted by your company or college, disabling or changing proxy should do the trick.
